Health Care Proxies’ Perceptions Among all 323 health care proxies, 96.0 percent believed comfort was the primary goal of treatment, and at the last assessment, 20.0 percent of healthcare proxies believed that the resident for whom they were responsible had less than six months to live. Just 18.0 percent of healthcare proxies stated that they had received prognostic information from a physician. Whereas 81.4 percent of the proxies felt they understood which clinical complications to expect in advanced dementia, only 32.5 percent stated a physician had counseled them about these complications.
